Wynell Hunt’s Caregiver Story

My Story

Life for me and my family was forever changed on August 1, 1985. My youngest son, 20-year-old Scotty, suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car wreck where he was a passenger.

Scotty was in a coma for 9 weeks and our Neurosurgeon gave us NO hope that he would emerge from the coma. We would not allow ourselves to believe this, so we did everything we possibly could to keep things positive regarding Scotty.

We asked the medical team to please NOT say a single negative word in his room. We believed that he could hear us, so we talked to him, read the sports page, played Christian music, and treated him as though he could hear and understand.

We rubbed his arms, hands, and feet and hugged him a lot. We prayed in his room and read verses from the Bible to him daily. We chose verses that spoke to our hearts and seemed to be written especially for him and us!! It brought us comfort and strength to read God’s promises.

After he emerged from the coma, there were still MANY challenges to face!! He had to learn to walk and live again. We quickly learned to take life ONE DAY AT A TIME! We could NOT hurry this healing process along by worrying, but only by daily trusting God and doing what that day required. I kept a journal and wrote in it every day, partly to cope with fears and concerns and also to help me be more aware of the progress Scotty was making. Putting these thoughts on paper helped me to keep a more positive attitude.

After keeping this journal for seven years, we published a book from that material. Of course the material was greatly shortened to make the book more readable. The book’s title is “Why Scotty?” and can be obtained by writing to:
